A Belle Vale couple say they are around £2,000 out of pocket after their wedding singer cancelled ten minutes before the bride walked down the aisle, then failed to return the £1,400 they had paid him in advance. Shannon and Ethan Jones, both 25, married at The Bentley in Liverpool on July 25 and have spent three months chasing a refund that, Shannon says, has never arrived.
The couple's experience, first reported by the Liverpool Echo, is not simply a story of one cancelled booking. It is a window into how ordinary people, often young and without surplus wealth, are left to absorb the losses when informal consumer relationships break down and the systems designed to help them move at a crawl.
What happened at The Bentley on July 25
Shannon Jones told the Echo she had booked former X Factor contestant Gary Barker to perform at the wedding, paying £1,400 in advance: a £700 deposit on July 17, 2025, and the remaining £700 on June 7, 2026, at the singer's request. They had held FaceTime calls with him beforehand, and she described him as friendly and enthusiastic. Days before the ceremony, she said, he called to say he could not wait to come and sing.
Then, as Shannon was preparing to walk down the aisle with her mum, the registrar relayed a message: the singer would not be attending. According to the Echo, a WhatsApp message later explained he had been taken seriously ill and was being treated in hospital.
The couple scrambled to fill the gap. The venue provided music, and one of Shannon's bridesmaids, herself a singer, performed for around two hours while they arranged a replacement at an additional cost of £500.
Three months of chasing a refund
Shannon said she accepted the medical explanation and was genuinely concerned for the singer's wellbeing. What shifted her position was the aftermath. She phoned on July 27 and got no answer. On July 31, she said, he called to apologise, explaining he had only just returned home from hospital.
