Researchers at Edinburgh University's Software Sustainability Institute working on green computing initiatives

In a groundbreaking move challenging institutional power structures within academic research, Edinburgh and Cambridge universities have unveiled "Green DiSC" - the first free, open-access certification scheme addressing the environmental impact of computational research.

Confronting Digital Academia's Carbon Footprint

This initiative emerges at a critical moment when systemic inequities in institutional resources intersect with the urgent need for climate justice. High-performance computing and AI research, while driving technological advancement, have been complicit in perpetuating environmental harm through significant greenhouse gas emissions.

Decolonizing Research Practices

The Software Sustainability Institute (SSI) at Edinburgh, working alongside Cambridge, has developed this certification to democratize sustainable computing practices. This collaboration represents a crucial step in challenging systemic inequities within academic institutions while addressing environmental justice.

Key Implementation Features

  • Accessible training resources for sustainable computing
  • Guidelines for eco-conscious hardware selection
  • Sustainable data storage practices
  • Environmental impact assessment of computing infrastructure
"Digital research has a growing environmental footprint, but there's not a lot of guidance on how to reduce it. The Green DiSC certification gives researchers clear, practical steps to improve the sustainability of their work," states Dr. Kirsty Pringle, project manager at SSI.

Six research groups, including the Breast Cancer Research Data Science Team, have already received certification, demonstrating the initiative's potential for widespread impact. The next application deadline is November 19th, offering more research teams the opportunity to join this transformative movement.
